Hvar Island by motorcycle – our journey on the infamous Croatian roads

In Croatia, if you want to wish someone bad luck, it is said: “May you die on the roads of Hvar”. This is where the most winding and dangerous roads in Croatia are supposed to be. Another saying says: ” Point of view depends on the point of sitting” and because we know that the best sitting is on the motorbike seat, so we were not afraid of winding roads, curses, and other devilish tricks. The Island Hvar by motorcycle, with such an infamous reputation, was only like a promise of a great adventure.

Hvar Island by motorcycle – how to get there?

Hvar can be reached by ferry from Split, Drvenik, and Italian Ancona and Pescara. Pay attention to the type of ferry, some ferries only transport people. Motorcycles very often have priority of entry, but this is determined by the ferry crew. We always had priority entry, but we do not know how it looks in the summer season. It may happen that there will be no room for you, so it is worth it to appear at last a quarter of an hour before the departure of the ferry. Cruises from Dvernik are much cheaper than those from Split, however, if someone has never sailed by a large ferry, we recommend at least once sail from Split – cool, first impression and beautiful panorama of the city from the sea.

The Island Hvar by motorcycle and its legendary roads

The infrastructure on the islands is much less developed than on the mainland. It is good to make sure that we do not run out of fuel for the return trip. The quality of the roads is also very often much worse. And how is it on Hvar? Well, differently, part of the island has great roads (Jelsa – Hvar), the part has not been renovated for years, but we do not think that very different from some sections, which we can experience in Poland. Holes, patches, stones, sand and gravel from landslides – almost like at home after winter. “May you die on the roads of Hvar”?  We have no idea where such a saying comes from, because “the devil’s not so black as he is painted”, although we recommend greater caution, especially that some roads are not properly secured to this day, and where the road ends, a chasm often begins. For us, the Island Hvar turned out to be one of the most beautiful places. Stunning blueness, almost merging with the sky, as if creating unity with flourishing nature – not as timidly as in Poland, but showing all its vitality and energy – you can really fall in love with such Croatia.

Hvar Island by motorcycle – what to see on this tiny island?

They say the sun shines on Hvar for 300 days. I think we had to hit the other 60 because the weather was bad and our plans were a little thwarted. Instead of visiting Hvar, we went to Sveti Jure, because it was the last chance to go there until the weather goes bad. Before leaving we managed to see only Stari Grad, despite the fact that Hvar and Jelsa were still in the plans. And most importantly! If you are on Hvar during lavender flowering (June – August), you must necessarily go to Velo Grablje or around Brusse. It is not without reason that Hvar is called the lavender island. We wrote about Stari Grad here – necessarily see this city full of charming nooks and crannies and beautiful architecture.
