Timmelsjoch on a motorcycle – one of the most beautiful scenic routes

Timmelsjoch, also known as the Passo del Rombo, is one of those routes that should, in our opinion, be at the top of the list “must-see” any motorcycle tourist. The route is located in the Öztal Alps, separating northern Italy from Austria, revealing the Alps of North and South Tyrol. Picturesque, beautiful and still not very commercial. All of this makes the Timmelsjoch on a motorcycle a pure pleasure for the eyes, spirit, and wheels. Amazing 44 turns at an altitude of more than 2500 meters.

Timmelsjoch on a motorcycle – where is the best place to start your journey?

When planning a trip to the Alps, the most optimal solution for us was to drive through Timmesjoch on the way back from Italy, where we had spent the night on the Stelvio Pass. If you are also planning to drive around Stelvio, Gavia, and Umbrialpass, then returning to the north via Timmelsjoch is the most interesting option, and certainly one of the most beautiful. The route from Bolzano leads through the sunny Passeiertal vineyards to the valley of the Ötztal glacier.

Timmelsjoch on motorcycle – toll

We cannot fail to notice an improvement in the quality of the road on the Austrian side, but we have to pay for this. The fee is charged at the gates at the viewing point. The ticket is accompanied by a map and a sticker from Timmelsjoch. For fans of automotive history, there is a Top Mountain Motorcycle Museum Crosspoint right next to it. The price list for 2019 can be found below.

What is worth knowing about Timmelsjoch?

  • The route is open from mid-June to mid-October, although this is dependent on weather conditions.
  • Altitude 2509 m above sea level, max. slope 11.8%.
  • The good surface on the Italian side, great on the Austrian side. Although, as always, you should be careful, because there are pebbles.
  • In our opinion, the route is quite easy. Gentle and not demanding turns, good surface.
  • Timmelsjoch is 44 turns at 49 kilometers (to Platt im Passeiertal).
  • The route on the Austrian side is payable – the price list above. Of course, you can enter from the Italian side and return on the same route.
  • You can follow the weather on the official website of Timmelsjoch – Passo Rombo.

Timmelsjoch on a motorcycle – is it worth it?

Oh, yeah. It’s really one of those mountain passages that are memorable. The long, picturesque route, running through the Alps, makes a really amazing impression. Surely it is one of the nicer ones we have driven so far and we are sure that none of you will regret the money spent on the trip. The surface is great on the Austrian side, a little bit worse on the Italian side, really cool, quite wide corners and the majestic Alps around – nothing more is needed to be happy. A huge advantage of Timmelsjoch, also called the Passo del Rombo, is that it has not yet become a pilgrimage center like Stelvio Pass.  Although we were in the middle of August, the traffic on the route was decent, we suspect it will be negligible on other dates. If you are still wondering if it is worth it, you shouldn’t.
